Worship Services

The worship services celebrated in the Orthodox Church are ancient. They evolved simply and logically from the the Old Testament Temple and synagogue services.

The texts we use today are identical to those that were common usage in the universal, undivided Christian Church of the first three centuries. Most were compiled (not composed) between the fourth and seventh centuries, and have been handed down to us in their original New Testament (“koine”) Greek language.

The only significant change to our services from the first centuries of Christianity is that in the past half century they have been translated from Greek into English for use in our parishes. Prior to that, they were translated from Greek into Slavonic (an early Slavic language) for Russian-speaking peoples in the tenth century.

Blessing Services

The Orthodox Church celebrates various blessing services throughout the year for the sanctification of the faithful and of the world.

Holy Days

Our Hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, asks that each parish celebrate the Divine Liturgy (preceded by the appropriate services of Great Vespers and Matins) on every Sunday of the year, as well as on various dates (“Holy Days”) commemorating major feasts during the Orthodox liturgical year.

To read the list of dates of Holy Days, on which the Divine Liturgy is to be celebrated throughout the year, click here.

Great Feasts

The Orthodox Church celebrates events in the life of the Lord and of His blessed Mother that are part of God’s “economy” for our salvation.
