The Eight Resurrectional Apolytikia

Every feast day has its own particular hymn (tropárion). This hymn is first sung at the end of Vespers and is therefore referred to as a Dismissal Hymn (Apolytíkion). This same Apolytikion is repeated at the beginning of Matins, as well as at the Small Entrance of the Divine Liturgy.

Every Sunday is a commemoration of the Feast of the Resurrection of the Lord (Páscha), and thus the Apolytikion sung at the end of Vespers, at the beginning of Matins, and at the Divine Liturgy is Resurrectional in its theme. Moreover, there are not one, but eight Resurrectional Apolytikia corresponding to each of the eight Byzantine “tones” or “modes.”

The eight Byzantine “tones” are: Tone 1, Tone 2, Tone 3, Tone 4, Tone Plagal, Tone Plagal 2, Grave Tone, and Tone Plagal 4. The term “plagal” means “derivative,” and the three plagal modes are derived from the primary tones.

Following are the eight Resurrectional Apolytikia which are among the most well-known hymns of Orthodox worship.

Resurrectional Apolitikion, Tone 1

Resurrectional Apolitikion, Tone 1

The stone that had been sealed before Your tomb by the Jews, • and the soldiers guarding, did watch o’er Your pure and sacred Body; • O Savior the third day You arose, • and unto all the world do You give life. • Whereby all the heavenly powers did proclaim • that You are the Giver of life; • Glory unto Your resurrection O Christ; • Glory unto Your kingdom; • Glory to Your dispensation, O You alone Who loves all.

Resurrectional Apolitikion, Tone 2

Resurrectional Apolitikion, Tone Plagal 1

Eternal with the Father and the Spirit is the Word, • Who of a Virgin was begotten • for our salvation. • As the faithful we both praise and worship Him, • for in the flesh did He consent • to ascend unto the Cross, • and death did He endure; • and He raised unto life the dead, • through His all-glorious resurrection.
